Title: Eyes of Autumn (The Marcel Experience #2)
Author: Cynthia H. Wise
When his “uncle” is killed in a suspicious accident, Marcus re-inherits Hillyerd Estate and moves his forces to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. Little does he know, his life is about to change when he comes face-to-face with the only woman he’s ever loved—a woman he lost long ago. The only problem is that she doesn’t remember him. When evil from his past emerges and attempts, once again, to destroy everything he holds sacred, Marcus must fight to keep his woman safe and protect the empire it took him more than a century to build.
Since this was my introduction to The Marcel Experience, I was a little nervous to start with the second book. Color me pleasantly surprised to find that I didn’t need to read the prior book to understand the characters and plot of this book. What I did notice, which really made me even more intrigued to read the first book, was Wise’s casual interludes of characters who have clearly interacted prior to the current plot. I can see how their stories intersect with Marcus’ and Katie’s so easily, adding to my excited to see how the third book will go as well.
Eyes of Autumn was a bit of a slow start for me, but it gained momentum gradually until I was completely hooked. This is one of those books that I found myself reading late into the night unable to put the book down long enough due to my need to see what happened next. Yet another case of the “just one more chapter” book nerd problem.
What I loved most about this story was Katie. She was a main character I could easily get behind, but my favorite thing about her was her ability to face every problem, mystery and strange occurrence happening around and to her with such grace. Sure, for most of the book she’s her own worst enemy when it comes to Marcus (who I’d like to sink my teeth into, if you know what I mean), but she’s actually accepting of the supernatural things around her. Logically speaking, most people would panic at their ability to see the past through their own eyes. I definitely would have a bit of trouble keeping myself together, that’s for sure. She shows her strength in never backing down or letting it break her.
I could read an entire book devoted the Marcus’ employees and associates. With every new character introduced to us through Marcus’ company the possibilities of just how supernatural Wise’s world is grew. Like I said before, I’m hooked.
While I wait for the third book to come out, I’ll definitely be picking up Portrait of Rage the first installment of The Marcel Experience.
