What am I currently reading?

16060716Guess what? I’m still chugging through Lair of Dreams. I’m slowly encroaching on the amount of time it took me to read the first of the Diviner series books. I don’t know what it is about this series that makes me read so slowly, but I’m not a quitter. I won’t give up. I don’t think it’ll be much longer, though. This year, I’ve made a promise to myself that I’m going to TRY to read one book at a time. Usually, I’m the type to read four, maybe five books at a time and always one book gets left behind. We’ll see how long this actually lasts. So far it’s been one day. I’m being optimistic here. Extremely optimistic.

25817407Okay, I know that I literally just said I’m only going to read one book at a time, but THIS DOESN’T COUNT! I’ve mentioned before that my assistant as just as big of a book nerd as I am, so we listen to audiobooks together while working in my office. We recently finished the Selection series and noticed that The Siren was on Scribd in audio and started it. I’m liking it so far. It’s such an interesting take on the lore of sirens. The main character Kahlen is really relatable to me in a lot of ways. She’s so content being by herself, but at the same time loves the company of her fellow siren sisters and really just wants to love and be loved in return. I mean, that’s really all any of us can ask for right?

What have I recently finished?

25827242I listened to this first book of this series on audiobook in conjunction with a book tour, you can find my review of the book here. I had been wanting to read this book for a while, but last year was just not having it. 2016 had no chill. I was really excited for the opportunity to review the audiobook and have since then been asked to review the next two books in the series. I can’t wait! This is another truly original take on the possibility of magic and the supernatural in our everyday lives. I also really love Terry Maggert’s take on magic in general and can’t wait to delve deeper into the world.

27774235There can never be enough moments for me to express how much I love the Soul Summoner Series, so here we go again. This series is probably one of my most recommended books/series. Elicia Hyder isn’t just one of my favorite people in the world, she’s one of my favorite new authors as well. The Detective is a small e-novella revolving around the origin of one of the main characters for the series, Nathan McNamara aka the love of my life aka #letsplaydetective. I had started this a while ago, but for STRANGE reason I never finished it. Clearly, I had to remedy that ASAP. I loved this story, but I may be a bit Nathan bias. I want him all to myself. Ask my assistant, I fought her for custody.

30781108I just finished this book last night, hence my one day of only reading one book at a time. I received this book from my monthly subscription to The Nervous Breakdown’s Book Club, which I will recommend to anyone looking for smaller press books that you may or may not originally pick up. I’ve found so many amazing books through them. The Loved Ones hit me so deep in my core. I was so infatuated with this story. It revolves around the lives of two major families, a Korean family who immigrated to America after being war refugees and a mixed-race family who lives in the same area, and how their lives intertwine over decades of time. Chung is a brilliant writer. This is a heart-breaking-warming-touching story that I would highly recommend.

What am I going to read next?

220552621I love everything of Victoria Schwab’s that I’ve picked up so far. I’ve been wanting to pick up this series forever, ever since I received a copy of A Gathering of Shadows from Muse Monthly when Schwab collaborated with them (which if you don’t subscribe to Muse Monthly, please do! In my opinion, this is the best subscription bookish box on the market.) This month, the Geekly Inc book club picked this as it’s first read of the year and I thought this would be the perfect time to pick it up! This is also going to double as a YA or middle grade novel by an author who identifies as LGBTQI+ for Book Riot’s Read Harder challenge for 2017!

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

28110143Guys! Guys! Do you know how excited I am that I actually kept to my TBR plans and started Furthermore?! I’m pretty proud of myself, I won’t lie. Usually when I say I’m going to start a book next, I forget about it and start a billion other books first. Times are a’changing! Anyway, I’m liking this book the farther I get through the story. I’m loving the Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of OZ feel of the lands. I’m hoping to finish this book today or tomorrow, which will probably happen since I’m determined to not put this down. It’s so freaking cute.

11434364Because I’m super incapable of reading one book at a time, mostly because I have this inability to carry the same book and/or device with me everywhere I go. I, however, ALWAYS have something on me. So I started this book on Kindle recently and so far it’s really interesting. I’m a huge comic books fan, so I pretty much get grabby hands for anything having to do with comics, superheroes and everything in-between. It’s probably going to be a slow go through this book since my Kindle is the one thing I don’t carry with me all that often, but I think it’s going to be enjoyable.

I’m also still reading Lair of Dreams and The Heir, but to be honest, I’m not making so much progress right now.

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

28260587It’s time. I don’t know why I’ve been putting this off for so long. I love this series so much. I think it’s mostly because I don’t want to have to wait for the next book to come out again. I feel like I’ve been waiting ALL FREAKING YEAR for this book to come out. I even bought it the day it was released and haven’t even cracked the spine. I think this book is also the reason why I’m so wanting to get through Furthermore so badly. I’m coming Aelin, I’m coming!

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

16060716Guys, you’ll never believe it. BUT I FINISHED THE DIVINERS. Finally! It only took me literally half the year to get through. So, what did I do immediately after finishing? Of course, I started the sequel. Here’s to hoping that Lair of Dreams takes me a little less time than six months to finish. I’m suddenly starting to feel like I’m a glutton for punishment, but who’s really paying attention to that? But, I really couldn’t help myself, even for as long as it took me to read the first book, I really loved all of the characters and couldn’t stop myself from needing to know what happened next.

6260997This was originally the Our Shared Shelf book club pick for September, but I ended up starting it a bit later in the month than I originally planned, so I’m still chugging along through it. This book is both devastatingly heartbreaking and educational. I’m actually having a bit of a difficult time getting through the book mostly because the topic makes me angry and so sad at the same time. The stories of these women are so touching and so horrifying that it is hard to sit still and continue reading when all I want to do now is travel to the Congo and volunteer in a hospital or donating all of my money so that young girls can get an education.

22918050The audiobook binge with my assistant continues! We devourer the first three books of The Selection with very girlish glee and took no time starting the fourth. We were somewhat surprised, though pleasantly to find out that the fourth book takes a time jump and is now about The Selection in reverse and revolves around American and Maxon’s eldest daughter. Like I told me assistant, we got The Bachelor, now it’s time to watch The Bachelorette. My only fear is the faster we get through this series the less of it there is to listen to and we don’t know which series we should start next.

15771083I recently downloaded A Monster Calls and then, like fate, it ends up being the October book club pick for the ThatOneReader Book Club. This seems to always happen to me, I download a book and then it gets picked for a book club read. Now, also most of the time I don’t have time to read it at the point in time. But, I give myself an A for effort.  So far I’m really loving this story though, so I think I may actually shock myself by finishing a book club read book long before the end of the month and the though of that makes me pretty happy.

Well, I consider my book slump’s ass officially kicked. Woo! Go me!

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

28110143Futhermore is one of those books where I’ve had it for a little bit now sitting on my large (and growing) TBR table and everyone is talking about it. While I attempt to have a little self control and read something I’ve had for longer first, all this talk is making me curious. I’ve been avoiding reading too in depth into what everyone has been talking about as to not ruin my own opinion while reading, but it’s starting to get to the point that everywhere I look some else is reviewing it. So to keep my anxiety down and from having to rapidly click out of another screen for fear of ruining the book. I’ll just have to read it next.

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Words where bloggers answer three simple questions regarding their week in reading.

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

7728889-_sx120_Thanks to lack of having time and motivation for reading over the last couple of months, I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’m still reading The Diviners. However, it’s not really for lack of interest or trying. In fact, I really enjoy this book! The problem is that I only have a copy of it on my iPad, which if left at home (which often happens) or dead (which happens more) tends to get neglected for anything else I can get my hands on. Progress is being made though! I’m hoping to have this finished by the end of the week or it may come alive and actually kill me.

15823425-_sy180_In my true fashion, I’m always listening to an ebook or podcasts on my daily commute or whenever I just feel like receiving strange looks from my coworkers who come in to my office and think I’m either on the phone or wonder what this magic voice is reading me a book (my coworkers aren’t all the brightest crayons in the box). It’s been a while since I’ve listened to a book, mostly thanks to bombarding myself with endless hours of podcast mastery. But, recently I realized that Scribd has quite a lot of the extended universe Star Wars books on audio. With the help of the amazing fans who complied this list of all the novels in cannon chronological order, I’m beginning my descent into the world of Star Wars like I’ve never read before.

2657-_sy180_I’m very fortunate to have an assistant who is as much into reading as I am and we’ve somewhat started ourselves a mini book club. My assistant had never read To Kill A Mockingbird, even for school, and it had been such a long time since I had read the book myself (at least a decade) that I said “what the hell” and picked it up too. Thanks to my inability to read one freaking book at a time (the bibliophile’s curse) my assistant has already finished the novel leaving me in her dust and moved on to other things, but I’m really enjoying this reread. While I’ve always had a love for this novel, I’m finding myself noticing different things and understanding the book better than I did when I was younger.

17162-_sy180_Remember those books that made you love reading? The Chocolate War was one of those for me. My sister had bought me this book when I was much younger and I went on to complete obsess over the rest of Cormier’s work. Like To Kill A Mockingbird it had been a really long time since I had picked up this book, so when I saw it for really cheap at one of my local independent bookstores I couldn’t say no. I’m most likely going to end up reading all of his books again over time now that I’ve started to remember so much about this book. Oh nostalgia.

16248068-_sy180_Like I mentioned before, my assistant and I have been enjoying reading together and since we’re in my office the majority of the day we’ve taken up listening to audiobooks together. We both had zero idea what The Selection was, so we started there. OH MAN, we’re hooked. In case there are some Selectioners, or whatever you people what to be called, out there, I’m totally team Maxon. My assistant can attest to how often I mimic America’s sighing and every conversation that happens. In reality, thinking about it now, I’m probably not the best person to listen to audiobooks with.

WHAT HAVE I RECENTLY FINISHED?

My assistant and I absolutely flew through The Selection and have since then moved on quickly to The Elite. We are one hundred percent guilty of leaving the office to go on long car rides for errands that could have definitely waiting till later just because our general manager, who I share my office with, was working. At first we weren’t so sure we were going to enjoy the series, but boy were we wrong.

If you’ve read any of my past reviews you’d know that I’m one Elicia Hyder’s biggest fans and very proud to call her a friend on Twitter. One day I will have a beer with Elicia and it will be amazing. Anyway, The Angel of Death is the third installment of her Soul Summoner series and I love this series so much. A more wordy and emotional review to come.

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

29069989I’ve been putting off reading this book since I bought it at midnight the night it came out. Other than the fact that I’ve been reading quite a few books at the same time, I don’t really have a reason for not picking up the book yet. I think it’s a combination of the fact that it’s going to be a quick read and I’m a little afraid I’m going to find it unsatisfying, not so much because of the content but because it’s only going to take me a few hours to blow through.

WWW Wednesday (January 6-13)

WWW

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Words where bloggers answer three simple questions regarding their week in reading.

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

I’ve made some progress on The Name of the Wind, but unfortunately not as much as I would have liked by now. I’ve had to put it down a few times to finish other books and it doesn’t help that I left it on my desk at work today. So far though, I’m really loving it. It’s so engaging.

7728889I like to get book recommendations from goodreads groups and book clubs, it’s a thing. I don’t always have the time to participate in the discussions of these books, but I at least get to read a book that I’ve either been thinking about reading for quite some time or something I’ve never even heard of. So really, it’s a win win. I got this pick from ThatOneReaders Book Club, which usually has some really great YA selections. I’ve had this book on my kindle FOREVER. I was such a huge fan of Libba Bray’s Gemma Doyle series when I was younger, so I’ve been really looking forward to tackling this read.

25392545I started this book this morning while running on the treadmill at the gym. Usually I listen to audiobooks, but I forgot my headphones, among other things, this morning and decided to start another book. This is another Overdrive borrow, yet, instead of waiting until the last two days to start the book, I’m going to finish it WAY before the lending period is up. I have some faith in myself guys. I can do this. Also, I went into this book not really having a single clue what it’s about and so far it’s been a super pleasant surprise. This is my second Rainbow Rowell book (my first having been Landline).

WHAT HAVE I RECENTLY FINISHED?

23664877You can find my review of Feast of Fates here, which I read as a part of it’s still ongoing book tour thanks to CBB Book Promotions. While I overall enjoyed this book, it had a lot of ups and downs for me. The language was so beautiful and poetic, but sometimes I got mentally lost in how pretty it all was that I forgot what was actually going on in the book. There was a whole lot going on too. I did really love the characters though. There is especially a really beautiful romance that occurs very early on in the book that while I found so adorable and a bit sexy, made me think back to the first twitter chat for Bout of Books and the hashtag #nakedwerewolves.

25551517If you’re my husband, I’m so sorry for talking so much about this book. I already make my poor husband listen to endless hours of Riot Grrrl, which includes every Sleater-Kinney album. Since starting and finishing Carrie Brownstein’s memoir though, he may murder me. His ears may be bleeding. I can’t help myself though. I love Sleater-Kinney and idolize Carrie Brownstein. And holy crap! She is such an amazing writer. I was completely blown away not only by the events of her amazing life, but because of her writing style. I couldn’t put this book down and when I had to, I was so grumpy about it.

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

Layout 1I originally picked up this book in the hopes that I would have time to attend a book club meeting for it at my local indie bookstore this past Sunday. However, I didn’t get as much reading done during Bout of Books that I wanted to and haven’t even cracked the spine. However, the more I hear about this book the more interested I am. Mostly, I’m interested because I recently learned that Elena Ferrante is actually the pen name of this publicly unknown Italian author. I’m not sure if it’s the mystery or the fact that this author is actually getting away with having a pen name in this day and age that makes me so intrigued.

WWW Wednesday (December 9-16)

WWW

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Words where bloggers answer three simple questions regarding their week in reading.

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

6266872A friend of mine, more specifically my DM from my DND group, is a huge fantasy nerd. Go figure right? One night during a house party, we were semi-drunkenly (read: drunkenly with some modesty) drooling over the treasure chest that is his bookcase and I came across this book. I had heard of it, but never read it and apparently this brought to question our friendship. In an effort to save said friendship, he let me borrow the book. I’ve had it for a few months and thanks to other reading obligations hadn’t had the time to devote to reading it. Well, THE TIME HAS COME. BRING ON THE FANTASY!

WHAT HAVE I RECENTLY FINISHED?

18641982Audiobooks are my crack. I drive a lot for work, back and forth across town and what not, so I have a lot of commute time to spend listening to great narrators tell me a wonderful story. This has been on my TBR for some time and when I saw that Scribd had it on audio I jumped at the chance to listen to it. I really loved it. It’s about the Spanish vacation of the the Post family, who, while seemingly looking fairly normal are going through a really rough patch. I love books like these that follow a family through what seems like the worst parts of their lives and how they deal. And now I really want to go on a long vacation to a foreign country.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00005]I received this book from Entrada Publishing in return for an honest review. This was a different read for me as I don’t normally gravitate towards military-esque books. Not for lack of interest, more for lack of understanding. I’m glad I did, because this book forced me out of my comfort zone. I found it a bit unnecessarily long (it’s also the first book of a series, so go figure), but it was very interesting. It has a very pre-apocolytic feel to it as it explores a very possible outcome for our present society. Plus, it had so many (SO MANY) wonderful characters.

11235712I’ve been meaning to start this series for a long time, so when I saw that ThatOneReaders’s book club was reading it for the month of December I thought “what better time than now?” It’s been a while since I’ve read any fairy tale retellings and I both loved and hated that this was one. I thought everything about this story was so original, but the fact that I could fairly predict what would happen next was a bit bothersome. That’s a bit of a hypocritical notion for me since I like to pride myself on figuring out plot direct quickly. Despite all of that, I’m really excited to continue this series and see how all these retellings fit together!

25739148Holy crap, I loved this book. I received it for review from Blogging for Books. After reading the synopsis I thought it sounded fun. I was enthralled. This was one of the best reads I had this past week. I’m starting to think that I have a niche, I’ve been really digging multi perspective books lately. This was one of those satisfying reads where I would love to see these characters again, but I’m also so happy with everything that happened and how it ended. There is really nothing bad I can say about this book. I absolutely loved it.

15698479On my Audible account, I devote a lot of my listening time to longer, older series. I had been dying to get more into John Scalzi, since I think he’s fantastic, and these books were a must read (or listen. Semantics.). I’ve really been loving this books and I’m sad to be almost done with it, though excited because that means I’ll soon be again to go on the rest of Scalzi’s library. What’s great about this series in particular is how Scalzi is able to encompass multiple events and characters so seamlessly.

20423680I loved the Wayward Pines TV show. Man, were the books different. Now that I’ve read the books I really wish that they had taken a different approach to the show. This last book was a bit muddled by the amount of times each chapter changed to a different character, but as I mentioned above, sort of love that. This was a really nice conclusion to the trilogy. But, MAN cliff hanger?! Listen Blake Crouch, I need more Wayward Pines. Give it to me now. I have to know what happens.

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

25065629Growing up I lived in the shadow of my really really really rad older sister. Okay, in truth, I didn’t so much grow up in her shadow as much as I grew up trying to be as much like her as possible. I’m from my father’s second marriage and my sister and I are roughly twenty years apart in age. Which meant that my sister handed me down the best music, books, movies, you name it when I was really young. I quite literally grew up devouring and emulating Sleater Kinney. They were and still are one of my all time favorite bands. Carrie Brownstein is a big idol of mine, especially as a musician. I recently picked this up at the library an CANNOT wait to start reading it. I may not wait, but I’m a bit afraid of pissing off my friend who loaned me The Name of the Wind, so maybe I’ll try to hold off for a little bit.

HOW IS YOUR READING WEEK SO FAR?

WWW Wednesday (November 4-11)

WWW

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Words where bloggers answer three simple questions regarding their week in reading.

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

I was quite taken with the first of the Miss Peregrine’s series. It was the perfect amount of weird and creepy and interesting. The photos Ransom Riggs uses to compliment the story are some of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. And I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous of that idea. I unfortunately wasn’t as enraptured by the second book so I’m really hoping that this redeems the series for me. So far it’s proved very interesting, but I’m not really sure where it’s going to go from here.

So when Fox aired the Wayward Pines series, I had ZERO idea it was based of a book series until the one day I decided I was going to actually watch the credits. And there is was “based of the book series” blah blah blah. I just signed up for Kindle Unlimited to give it a try and there was Pines staring me right in the face. What better time to pick it up? I just started it today via audio while I was toiling away at my day job. It’s fairly similar to the what I remember from the show, but Ethan doesn’t seem as angry at Matt Dillon portrayed him.

WHAT HAVE I RECENTLY FINISHED?

I LOVED THIS BOOK. Maybe it was the fact that I listened to it, so the narration was really well done, but I really enjoyed this book. It was the perfect case of unreliable narrator, but more in the case of the person around whom the book revolves doesn’t get a true voice until the conclusion. So even when I thought I knew what had happened, I was thrown for one last loop at the very end. On top of this being a very compelling story, I fell in love with each of the characters from the mother, to the detective, to the kidnapper.

I can’t get enough of Rat Queens. This is one of those series that just speaks to me and my soul in such a unique way. Bad bitches, magic, squids coming down from the sky and smidgens who have an obsession with psychedelic mushrooms? Sign me the freaking hell up and take all of my money.

This was an interesting read. This if the fourth installation of Old Man’s War and actually is the retelling of the third book from the perspective of one of the main characters’ daughter. I didn’t actually mind that though because Zoe has the greatest voice. She’s sarcastic and funny. I kind of really want to be her friend. I mean she’s really cool. Like really cool.

I also just finished Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling. Review to come!

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

I’m going to get to The Name of the Wind still. I swear. I just happen to be a bit scatterbrained and horrible at getting to my TBR list. But who isn’t?
